An unusual and beautiful collaborative project between Christi Denton and Gene Kunze comprised of a 1 stringed Iranian instrument with 12 drone strings, wine and water glasses, and a time lapse video. Enjoy.
In merge, the film and the music were created quasi-independently - I don't
usually work that way, but I'd recently realized that I'd lost my CD of
"Indeterminacy" and I'd been thinking about how well the words of john cage
fit with the sounds that david tudor was creating independently, when I
started working on merge. My partner, gene kunze, had been experimenting
with stop-frame movies with his camera, and so I used three of his short
films, and then I ended up creating two more. My day job had gotten pretty
stressful when I was working on this project, and so the first sounds that I
starting to work with were sounds that were primarily long tones with lots
of overtones - really thick sounds that I could pull other sounds out of -
and sounds that I could meditate on. The first version of it didn't work
out that well between the music and the video, and so for the second version
(the one you're seeing now) I just tried to keep track of the break at 1:20
where it switches from the view of the protest to a view out a window.
After I got that to line up, the rest of it seemed to work perfectly.
